A comparison is made between the field of organizational psychology as I saw it in 1965 and how I see it today. We look across the research findings to identify three dimensions of flexibility that undergird alternative work arrangements: (a) flexibility in the employment relationship, (b) flexibility in the scheduling of work, and (c) flexibility in where work is accomplished. Social networks involve ties (and their absence) between people in social settings such as organizations. In this review, I discuss several recent theories and measures of context. In this interdisciplinary article collection, our experts explore the impact of democracy on society, including to the U.S. after women's suffrage and the politics, elections, and citizen equality of modern day. Despite an extensive history of research on status (the prestige, respect, and esteem that a party has in the eyes of others), the time is ripe for a new review of the status literature given a fairly recent trend to study the dynamic nature of status, that is, not just how individuals acquire status, but also how they maintain or lose it over time. This review describes that research and places it into an organizational context. We close with future directions for research and practice for tending to the first image and moving away from the second image of the new world of work.
